Double Glazing and Solar PV Helping Homes Become More Energy Efficient

A pilot scheme that’s been running in Sunderland has been extended, enabling more home owners to benefit from energy efficiency home improvements including double glazing and solar panels.

The scheme – aimed at refurbishing some of Sunderland’s draughtiest homes – is run by social housing firm Gentoo.

As part of its Energy Saving Bundle (ESB) scheme, customers can install double glazing, solar panels and new energy efficient boilers – at no upfront cost to themselves.

The aim of the initiative is to help customers become more energy efficient, which will in turn enable them to save money by lowering their energy bills.

Gentoo Green – who will be overseeing the work – surveyed 600 of its customers in order to gain an insight into peoples’ attitudes when it comes to paying for energy efficiency home improvements by means of a weekly charge.

“(The survey) found that 84% of customers asked would be prepared to pay for improvements and of those, 45% said they would pay more than £5 a week for measures such as photovoltaic panels, efficient boilers and double glazing,” explained Sally Hancox, director of Gentoo Green.

For just 16p per week, eligible customers can install new uPVC windows and a new boiler, while a solar PV system will cost £1 per week. To keep things simplified, customers will pay their energy supplier – in this instance British Gas – for the work they have carried out, alongside their normal household energy bills.

“We’re over the moon with the energy efficiency works Gentoo have installed to our property. Our house is now much warmer and more comfortable to live in, and we’ve seen approximately a 30% reduction in our energy bills too,” commented one happy Gentoo customer, whose property was fitted with double glazing, solar PV panels and a brand new boiler.
